out of this world design

For several years I’ve been asked to creative direct the fall spiritual growth campaign (a small group Bible study curriculum).  The theme for 2018’s launch is Fearless Faith – Radical Trust.

I was exploring the idea of what takes heaps and heaps of trust… thinking about the fact that we constantly trust our lives to other drivers on the road but we struggle with trusting our coworkers, our friends, our spouse, and we especially struggle to trust God.  When thinking about the the car and the freeway I figured I’d step up the tech to a level of trust that many would not be comfortable with– rocketing off into space.  Would the everyday human be able to trust the thousands of nuts, bolts, wires, circuits, and computers that make up a spacecraft?  Not to mention trusting thousands of flawed humans to create the thing and run the mission.  This really gets us thinking about the nature of trustworthiness.

The team loved the look of the first draft so this is what we used.  Enjoy.

appropriation is a fine destination

While I searing the web for inspiration and possibly imagery, I stumbled upon the work of a brilliant Photoshop artist named Jacob Watts.  Since there was no budget available to afford licence fee that Mr. Watts can command for the image he created, I challenged myself to simply appropriate the idea and “photoshop it” myself.  Luck was on my side.  I found a stock photo of the same type of space suit for just a few bucks and created the hero image for the campaign.

To finish off the look, I referenced a NASA branding PDF from the NASA website.  This is still one of my favorites.  Thank you internet!

“Would you display the same level of trust if ask to jump into a spacecraft as you do jumping into your car each day?”
